Three-Tiered 25w25 Update

Over the weekend I addressed three of the items on my 25w25 list!

1. Try new recipes
I found a recipe for Brown Butter Salted Caramel Snickerdoodles on Pinterest and thought I'd give them a try. This was my first time browning butter, and I didn't burn it!! It was also my first time baking with Greek yogurt.

The cookies turned out pretty delicious, but there are definitely a couple of changes that I'll make next time. For example, I don't think the caramel really enhanced the cookie - they didn't melt like I'd anticipated they would. Also, next time I'll only roll the snickerdoodle dough in sugar before baking - the ground cinnamon flavor was a bit too strong.

I also made these Almond Toffee Butterscotch Blondies. I've got a sweet tooth that rivals all others, but boy, these blondies were rich! I'm not sure why the recipe calls for it to be a pie, maybe I'll try it again and make them in a 13x9 pan.

2. Throw a party inspired by one of the ideas I've pinned on Pinterest.

Well, because I waited until [nearly] the last minute to address this goal, I decided to use this pin as inspiration for our girls night movie night -- especially since we were going to watch "A League of Their Own."

Brandi brought over Pop Rocks and neither Kimmy nor I had ever tried them.

The many faces o' Pop Rocks.

We also experimented with Jamberry nail wraps. Well, I gave up after only one nail, but we had lots and lots of laughs during the process!

In addition to "A League of Their Own," we also watched "Can't Buy Me Love."

Man, I love the 80s. Young Patrick Dempsey, yes please!!

I love a good girls night, and I had an absolute blast with Kimmy, Jilly, Sissy and Mal. [Think I'm a fan of nicknames?] I'm already ready for the next one -- so much fun!

Chalk It Up

I'm pretty sure you're tired of hearing that I have the best job in OKC, but it's true. And I absolutely work with the best people.

Prove it? Okay.

On Friday, we spent the afternoon "installing" the new chalk wall in Bricktown.

You read that right - a chalk wall. Meander just east of the Bricktown entry bridge, between Reno and Sheridan, and you'll find yourself in the presence of our latest public art project.

Our team went out there to get the wall started - and while that was fun in and of itself - the best was when people would stop to look at what we were doing, and then pick up a piece of chalk and add their own stamp to the mix.

I penned this little ditty for my friend Elisa.
We both have an [appropriately sized] crush on Nick Collison, so I knew she'd love it!

I was super impressed with Cam's rendition of the Skydance Bridge!

I love me a good "subtext" hashtag, but I really love it when hashtags are used strategically and purposefully. For instance, I just found this picture because she used the hashtag!

I was talking to someone over the weekend about my career path since college. I never thought I'd stay in OKC after I graduated. But here I am, 4 years later, and I fall in love with this city more and more every day.

My job is a big part of that, and I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunities it affords me... like chalking in the middle of the workday.

A-Okay 10K

I completed my first 10K race yesterday!!

Bobbie, Tessa and I ran the Redbud Classic - in the chilly rain, no less. We are women, hear us roar!!

Prior to leaving the house, I texted Bobbie and asked her to send me a picture of what she was going to wear during the race. Always the funny lady, she added, "See the face I'm giving you?"

Naturally, my sass got the better of me... I sent her a mirror image [see what I did there?] of her pose with my version of her "I'm seriously doing this?" face.

All I have to say is, if you get the chance to run a race through Nichols Hills, do it. The residents came out in full force and cheered us on. That definitely kept me going when the rain started coming down harder and the miles started feeling longer.

Their porta potties were also a cut above the rest...

One thing that had me giggling in the first mile was the digital "your speed" signs. Probably the only time they read 5, 6, 8 miles per hour. [Not sure what happened to the other half of the number in this photo. But this was an action shot.]

On the course, there was a mariachi band, a few people had live bands in their driveways - there was even a pirate themed water station. Mad props to the Redbud team for upping the entertainment factor for us!

The last 1.2 miles felt like 5 - probably because there were 3 substantial hills at the end. There was a lady in the last big group of people that I ran past before crossing the finish line who shouted, "You're almost there! You're almost there!" As I got past the group, I heard a child's voice say, "No you're not!" Ornery little kid.

Literally, the moment I crossed the finish line, my phone died. Hallelujah for good timing!!

Speaking of timing, this girl finished 6.2 miles in 1 hour and 4 minutes. Woop woop! Praying so [SO] hard for a dry day during the half-marathon.

I also ran into a few friends at the race - it was super fun to see them on the course - and one friend even said some encouraging words [as he passed me] about a quarter mile from the finish line.

We're less than 3 weeks away from the half marathon and only 12 days away from the deadline for my 25 while 25 list. [Speaking of, I've got some fun updates for you on Wednesday!]

April is already flying by.

Two Handsome Dudes

Yesterday, I had two dates with two very handsome dudes.

And by dates I mean platonic hangouts...

And one of those dudes was simply the name of a restaurant...

First up: Urban Johnnies
Jill, Brandi and I ventured to this new hot spot in Deep Deuce for lunch yesterday. Everything on the menu sounded amazing, so I have no doubt that we will return for another meal very soon!

After hearing rave reviews of the House Made Onion Dip, we gave it a try. It was beyond delicious. Seriously... so good! We also tried the UJ Cheese Fries, UJ Crab Cakes, the Grilled Cheese, and the Pot Roast.

Ordering a variety of food and trying bites of each is my favorite way to dine. So, who wants to go back with me? A couple of those burgers sound too good not to taste!

Date Number Two: Peloton Wine Bar & Cafe

After our staff retreat, it was decided that it would be good idea to have one-on-one drink/snack outings with a co-worker in order to leave the office talk behind and get to know each other... especially now that we have a couple new staffers.

Well, Joe and I went on our "date" yesterday to Peloton. And coincidentally, I was able to add another Keep It Local retailer to my 25 while 25 list!

It was the perfect day for a little patio dining -- filled with great conversation and laughter. There was grooving to the Hall & Oats station on Pandora, Barre3 demonstrations, and the best hummus ever.

My Thursday was filled with some stellar downtown dining, as well as putting the phone down - except to take photos - to spend time with the people I get to call co-workers and friends!

Cheers to Friday and a fun weekend ahead!

Springtime Superlatives

This Carolina girl is a big fan of springtime.

Sundresses & sandals
Flirty skirts
Bright pedicures
Spray tans
Cool breezes
Warm sun on my skin
Tulips in bloom
Patio dining
Lighter locks [hooray for a hair appointment today!]

However, here in Okie land, it's not spring... it's storm season.

Also known as, the period of time when I'm in a constant state of panic. [Thank you dear meteorologists for always forecasting the impending doom and gloom of hail and tornadoes.]

We're 3 days in to April and it's turning into quite the hectic month. Who would've guessed it?!

7 days until the second annual Starlight Supper.

9 days until the adventure inside this box is coming to a blog near you. (#25w25)

14 days until I'm back home to spend Easter weekend with my parents in Hilton Head.

16 days until my 26th birthday.

24 days until my first half marathon.

I'm dreaming springtime dreams while plugging away through April's crazy schedule...

This is No April Fools' Joke

I am gullible. Half of the day yesterday I forgot that it was April Fools' Day. It's just not my holiday.

::Setting the Stage::

I was pretty down on myself on Sunday when I attempted my long run [8 miles]. After only two miles, the strong Okie winds had me beat. Literally. My calves were hard as rocks, and I just couldn't carry on. Defeated, I walked the two miles back home.

Last night's scheduled run was a 5-miler. I felt surprisingly optimistic when I got to the river trails and decided I'd go right, instead of left, and see how far the path went.

Great songs - check.
Beeboppy attitude - check.
No pain in my legs, my ribs or under my collar bone - check, check, check!

My favorite thing about running a new route is all the new sights to observe. Last night, I couldn't believe just how far the trail was taking me. I ran under the interstate I take to the airport -- and then I ran under a road that falls into the "I don't even know where that is" category. [For you Okies, those streets are MacArthur, Meridian, Portland, Council & Rockwell.] You might as well say Kansas. They feel that far away to me!

Finally, I reached the turnaround point. I looked down at my app and I had run 3.46 miles. Hm, if I run all the way back, I'll be at 6.92 miles. I only have to run 5 miles tonight... maybe I should just keep going and hit that 8 mile mark from Sunday!

At one point on the way back, my shadow was directly in front of me - again, observations - and I just had to snap a pic at how disproportioned I looked. Where are my legs?! Who is this hip-heavy blob?! The second shadow pic is from last week. I call this my Gumby look. Looooong legs!

I had to fight my way through every step of the last 0.75 miles, but I did it! I did 8 miles [no walking or stopping] in 1 hour and 28 minutes. Squeal!!!

This is my new favorite spot in all of OKC -- it's the spot where I achieved 8 miles -- the longest distance I've ever run. This is the spot where I succeeded!

I also totally did a happy dance once I hit that 8 mile mark. I checked to make sure that no one saw me, but to be honest, I couldn't have cared less if anyone saw my embarrassing display of joy. I RAN 8 MILES!!!

Of course, I texted anyone that I thought might listen and shared my victory!

I've never felt such a need to express just how much something was NOT an April Fools' joke!!

As I walked back to my car, still on an adrenaline high, I was met with the most gorgeous sunset. So grateful for healthy legs to carry me through my training and glorious weather to enjoy during my run.

Please Don't Misunderstand

So - I thought about not writing this post... then I thought about not writing it again.

I'll probably reconsider it yet again before I'm done.

Truth be told, I'm nervous to post these two stories because I want my true intention to shine through. I don't want there to be any room for misunderstanding or questioning motives.

I've had two instances in the past week - two interactions with people a little down on their luck - and I just feel like I need to share.

I guess I should stop explaining now, and just start telling...

So, last week I was heading back to our office after a morning of lots of driving to multiple meetings. I had to park on the 8th floor of our parking garage - usually I get a spot on the 4th floor - annoyance number 1.

Then, I decided to take the elevator and had to wait 5 minutes for it to arrive - seriously, it felt that long. I should've just taken the stairs, but I just kept thinking "well, I've already waited this long" - annoyance number 2.

Next, we stopped on the 7th floor... the 6th floor... the 5th floor... the 4th floor.. before finally arriving at street level. Take the stairs people - yes, I'm a hypocrite - annoyance number 3.

As I walked in the glory of the sunshine back to the office - a very, very, VERY loud car horn kept honking. I have sensitive ears people - it's an actual condition - and it was annoyance number 4.

I was finally just outside of my office building when a man on the street asked if I had any money for food. No sooner had I gotten 10 feet past him, the thought occurred to me, "Here's the chance to turn your day around. Don't let your bad attitude stop you from doing something you feel called to do. It's not his fault you're in a crummy mood and a bit high maintenance when it comes to what annoys you."

I did a 180 and walked back over to him. "Sir, if you want to come in the bagel shop with me, I'd be happy to buy you some food."

Now, I love me a good bagel. So the guys in the bagel shop know me and did their usual "Lizzzzzzz! Heeeeyyyyy! What can we get you?" "Whatever this gentleman wants." As he looked over the menu and ordered, I could feel their eyes on me. I started to feel uncomfortable. I didn't want them to make a big deal over what I was doing.

In fact, I didn't even want to acknowledge it. [I think that's why I'm struggling with writing this post.] Yes, I was doing something nice. But I do plenty of not-nice things every week. Those don't get featured, I didn't want this to be either.

Fast forward to Saturday afternoon.

A man - who looked a bit worse for the wear - came into the boutique where I work on Saturdays. I immediately went into a funk. [Seriously - what's my deal?!] I was preparing myself for him to ask to use the restroom, for money, etc. We have some unusual folks wander in every once in a while.

I'll be real honest with you guys, I was a bit nervous to be alone in the store with someone who had yet to acknowledge any of my usual "Hi! How are you? What can I help you with?" cheery greetings.

He got up to the counter and motioned for a pen and piece of paper. Slightly annoyed he still hadn't acknowledged me, I handed him the paper and pen. He wrote, "Please call cab."

For a brief moment I thought, "What happens when I call a cab and he has no money to pay for it? What then? This could be so awkward." But, I called the cab company anyway.

The dispatcher asked for his name. "What's your name sir?" He pointed to his ears and tried to say something.

Light bulb: He's deaf.

I tried to stall and gave them the address for the store, while writing a note to ask him his name. After I got off the phone and wrote down that the cab would arrive in 15 minutes, Thomas [that's his name] picked up one of the bracelets by the counter and reached for his wallet. He had the biggest smile on his face and kept showing me the bracelet and some cash.

Cue the water works welling up.

I smiled back at him and said [wrote] it was okay, he didn't need to buy anything. I was happy to call the cab company for him. He kept smiling, folded his hands in front of him and did a little bow. He then walked outside to wait for the cab.

I saw the cab pull up and he gave a big wave as they drove off.

Cue the tears and such a heavy feeling of "I almost didn't help this man."

Kimmy just happened to walk in the store right as he left. You guys, God knew how badly I needed a friend at that moment.

Yes, I did a nice thing by calling the cab. But I had a terrible mindset while I was doing it. It wasn't until that light bulb went off and I realized that this man was humbling himself & asking for help, that I finally got off my high horse and changed my mindset to joy. How would I have felt if I wasn't physically capable of getting myself home without the assistance of others.

I told Kimmy the story and kept saying, "But I almost didn't help him! How terrible of a person would that have made me? What's wrong with me?!" She gave me a hug and said, "But you did help him. You did a good thing."

I think I've gotten so jaded by seeing the same people begging on the street every day, not to mention all the news stories that paint it all as a scam, that my heart has hardened a bit towards those that actually need my help.

I'm a bleeding heart through and through - and I don't want to lose that. I think that having those two experiences, within 3 days of each other, is shedding some light on an issue that I need to turn my focus towards.

Who am I to judge or question anyone's station in life? It is simply my role to give help when I can -- and never forget the smile and appreciation of a man named Thomas.
